Last week I took a few hours on a snowy Friday afternoon to peruse Oklahoma City’s An Affair of the Heart exhibits at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. If you’ve never visited this bi-annual event before, there are a few things you want to remember. Go on a Friday. Saturday and Sundays are crazy busy – especially if the weather is nice. Eat before you go. The “fair food” offered will require an hour long line wait and will put quite a dent in your pocket. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a large bag to carry your treasures in. If you think you might pick up a mother-load, I’d recommend buying a rolly cart they offer for sale there. That’s really for the marathon shoppers though..
This year the overwhelming trend for the event was chevron, infinity scarves and printed leggings. Angry women with teased and hairsprayed hair and tons of bling were practically brawling over them.
My favorite shops are the antique vendors who have collections of random trinkets. Gathered all together in wire baskets, wooden bowls or displayed on vintage linens, the most ordinary things can be so charming.
Also in style were brightly colored, chunky jewelry. This is admittedly a weakness of mine so I may or may not have bought a few too many bangles.
I was especially excited to see the overwhelming theme of OklaHome pride displayed on T-shirts, bags and other wearables. It’s exciting to see a trend in pride for our home state and I’m not gonna lie, I’m happy that our OklaHome company name is getting out there too!
The next An Affair of the Heart event will be fall 2014 just in time for holiday decorating shopping. Check it out at www.anaffairoftheheart.com
